Supplements can help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies, or provide amounts of nutrients larger than the diet can. By convention, the name vitamin is reserved for certain nutrients that the body cannot manufacture and are obtained through the food chain. Weight-loss, pure vegetarian, macrobiotic, and several other diets can place some people at risk of deficiencies that vary with the type of diet. Certain groups of people are at especially high risk of dietary deficiencies but most of us have a diet which does not give us appropriate levels of vitamins and minerals.
